comfort songs 03-09
Apartment talk-box performance, Chicago, 2009 [Mercedes Benz (Janis Joplin), duration 45 min]
o
I began Comfort Songs as a way to purposefully engage with my formative experience as a singer. The earliest performance was 90 Minute Company at Casa Del Popolo in Montreal in the Fall of 2003. For it I performed Company (Rickie Lee Jones) a cappella for 90 minutes, cabaret style. Since that time the performance has undergone a number of transformations, resolving into longer durational performances of different ballads for web, video and site. A six hour Company was presented at Spoke in Chicago in the Spring of 2009 and 12 hour version of I Fall to Pieces was included in the Blackwood Gallery event at Nuit Blanche in Toronto in October, 2009.

I began Comfort Songs as a way to explore the conceptual properties of the ballad. A ballad is a form that supports tremendous emotional projection: a net that catches and holds the biographical traces of all those who listen to it. The Comfort Songs performances were not endurance performances intended to inspire catharsis, rather the goal was to exhaust the affective nature of the material at hand in order to discover what might be left.
